The Materials Manager is a hands-on, working manager accountable for the design, documentation, implementation, audit and continuous improvement for all material handling standard work, projects and related systems. Position is responsible for managing all aspects of inventory, including but not limited to:


  • Managing inventories in order to maintain control and accuracy from the time raw materials are purchased and arrive, until the time finished goods are successfully shipped to and received by the outbound distribution centers.


  • This includes managing physical inventories, cycle counts programs and mitigating loss due to aging, by having a strong FIFO inventory control program as well as monitoring purchases to ensure adequate, but not excess inventory is on hand.


  • Working with FSQA and Production to ensure timely resolution of inventory issues.



  • Oversee plant production scheduling to maintain target inventories and customer service levels.
  • Oversee procurement of raw materials, packaging and supplies required for production schedule.
  • Oversee the timely delivery of materials of the production floor to meet schedule requirements.
  • Manage inbound receiving and storage. Ensure required inspections and paperwork is completed and compliant.
  • Manage outbound shipping and related paperwork.
  • Manage in-house storage and handling of materials, supplies and finished goods.
  • Maintain equipment and building to SQF and safety standards.
  • Understand the allergens control procedures and implement the allergen storage requirements. Train and audit the material handling team to meet all allergens control procedures.
  • Lead and align plant inventory management processes, procedures and related operational controls including, physical inventories and count cycles.
  • Establishment and review of inventory adjustment process.
  • Assure team members are using FIFO process.
  • Issue alerts on aging inventory. Work with production, scheduling and purchasing on timely disposition.
  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for inventory counts and reconciliations.
  • Manages use and training of applicable IS systems
  • Support/lead continuous improvement efforts
  • Enforce safety and maintain high housekeeping standards.
  • Hire, train, develop, motivate and retains staff using hands-on leadership techniques while support a safe performance based environment and promoting AWI's values.
  • Negotiate contracts and handle maintenance of forklifts and various other warehouse related equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • 4 Year Degree with a concentration in business or math is a plus.
  • A minimum of three years of purchasing and/or scheduling in a food manufacturing setting.
  • Must have experience negotiating contracts. Food industry preferred.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communications skills, along with the ability interact with internal and external customers.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word; knowledge of the JDE Purchasing system is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Must be hands-on, self motivated with attention to detail and able to multitask in a fast paced environment.
  • Prefer experience with operating a forklift
