Overview

The EH&S Manager will be responsible for directing the Plant’s training, safety, and environmental programs to protect employees against harm and maintain safe working conditions. Essential functions of this position will include the implementation and review of safety standards and procedures, maintaining compliance with reporting and recordkeeping requirements of federal or state regulations, and advising management on issues relating to EH&S. This position will have responsibilities for both the Oakland, MS and Toluca, IL Ajinomoto Plants.

 

Responsibilities

  • Effectively build and oversee reliable methods and processes that allow the organization to advance efforts in preventative and predictive safety and health initiatives.
  • Lead the EH&S processes, accident root cause analyses, and the behavioral based safety program.
  • Ensure Plant programs align with the Safety Scorecard and work with the Sr. EH&S Manager to implement and grow safety programs within the Plants.
  • Build a collaborative safety culture to empower employees, supervisors and department managers to participate and build an effective Safety Committee.
  • Provide information and interpretation on related standards, regulations, legal compliance and safe work methods.
  • Work with Production and Maintenance to determine corrective actions to eliminate or minimize potential or existing risks and hazards.
  • Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard management systems, policies, and procedures with recommended changes that reflect opportunities to eliminate work place injuries.
  • Conduct and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical and environmental conditions.
  • Identifies, assesses and manages risks and hazards of operations to team members, contractors and all others who may be effected.
  • Plans and implements programs to train supervisors and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment and other materials.
  • Provides safety expertise, training and leadership in areas such as industrial health and safety, lock out/tag out requirements, confined space requirements, etc. to meet the company’s positive safety culture.
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
  • Responsible for environmental compliance and permitting.
  • Maintains safety files and records.
  • Oversees and manages regulated programs to ensure compliance. Programs include Process Safety Management and Risk Management Plan (PSM/RMP), Tier II, CSAT, etc.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Safety and Health, Safety or Environmental Management, or Environmental Science required.
  • Five or more years of hand-on professional health, safety, and environmental experience in manufacturing environments required.
  • Industry certifications preferred: Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, and/or Occupational Health and Safety Technologist.
  • Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations at local, state and federal levels.
  • Proven ability to be proactive and can facilitate change by being a team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral and be able to work with all levels within the organization.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, Basic Safe, and Alchemy Systems is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% required.
